All my 4 core products are now being used on various websites for live field testing. This is great since it inevitably shows up some areas that could be enhanced and can show up any bugs that may be unique to hosted scripts rather than running them in a simulation environment on a local computer.

Some things I realized was that without a clear understanding of how the admin user affects the software according to the settings, it can get a bit confusing as to why some data is not logged such as repeated hits by the same person or a goal conversion.

So I think user manuals with diagrams will be very helpful, even though the software is very easy to use. Later I hope to produce videos but I think these are better for introducing the concepts of the software and for promotional purposes.

Please bear with me as I fine tune things ...

Also added a throttling feature to limit the frequency of downloads of the same file by the same person.

The new version has some changes to the config.php file so if you are upgrading, the first step is to edit the new config-new.php file and rename it to config.php.

Then upload all the files to over-write the old files. The script will then automatically perform an update and be ready for use preserving your existing data (download links).
Please read the readme.txt file for the full details.

Search Engine Friendly URLs

For any download or affiliate links, I recommend to always use what is commonly referred to as Search Engine Friendly URLs. These are links that look like URLs to a web folder rather than a script with a query string.

So your links look more professional and less like the work of a newbie affiliate or amateur webmaster.

Rather than a link like download?pid=32 you can display download/ultrasoft for example.

or for an affiliate link:

goto/instantbeauty rather than recycled-makeup.jp/affil/aid=457689 Which link would you click on?

With Linux-based hosting, it is easy to transform links in this way by means of the .htaccess file that is a text file with this exact name that you upload either to your home page folder or another one further along the directory tree branches.

Most of our scripts make use of this system of URL re-writing. Here is a typical .htaccess file that we may implement:

Code:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^download/([-0-9a-zA-Z]+)/?$ dt/download.php?id=$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^goto/([-0-9a-zA-Z]+)/?$ lm/redirect.php?name=$1 [L]

This is used with the Download Tracker script and the Affiliate Link Manager Script.

In this script the Apache web server Re-write engine is turned on. Then there are rules to obey according to the URL that is being accessed in the visitor's browser.

In the first case it is detecting a download URL. The first part of the rule is a pattern match for the name of a download file such as "game". In this case, the URL would be: mysite.com/download/game

Then the rule activates the real URL: mysite.com/dt/download.php?id=game

This runs the download.php script and passes the id parameter to the script.

The "$1" means the first parameter that is enclosed by the brackets in the pattern.

The [L] tells the server that this is the last rule to process if it got matched.

The next rule is for the Affiliate Link Manager software where we transform search engine friendly URLs to those suitable for use with the Affiliate Link Manager script.

It may seem complicated, but this code is a simple cut and paste to a text file that you name .htaccess and upload to your hosting. Then, as long as the scripts are installed in the given folders (/dt and /lm), the URL re-writing should just work transparently.

p.s. the pattern matching I mentioned uses a method called Relative Expressions if you want to look it up and study the subject.

Just a quick post to kick this off.

If you are unsure of how to do something with the Download Tracker, please post your question here.

This is not a pre-sales question forum since the software is currently free to download and try. More detailed information on the product features will be put up on a sales page in due course.

So after you downloaded it, read the readme.txt file and tried it out, it would be appropriate to ask questions here e.g. after you have at least tried it

I have tested it quite a lot myself, so hopefully there are no bugs left

If you are unsure of how to do something with the Download Tracker, please post your question here.

This is not a pre-sales question forum since the software is currently free to download and try. More detailed information on the product features will be put up on a sales page in due course.

So after you downloaded it, read the readme.txt file and tried it out, it would be appropriate to ask questions here e.g. after you have at least tried it

I have tested it quite a lot myself, so hopefully there are no bugs left

Thanks for visiting this web site and I hope you will find some of the products useful in your online business.

So far I have released the Download Tracker software which is a PHP script to allow you to track downloads of your digital products and offer clean, simple URLs for the download links without revealing the locations of your uploads.

Very soon, I will introduce the Affiliate Link Manager software. This script is used to cloak affiliate links which means the links can look like normal links on the web.

Also, referrer data such as keywords are hidden from the offer page. This is so that affiliate companies cannot steal your Ad campaigns by knowing what keywords are driving your traffic. Also, you can funnel the clicks via a remote site that hides the original source of the visitor.

In an age where business practices are becoming ever more competitive and ruthless, tools like this are important for the small business to protect their hard work and preserve profits.

The tracker also logs the click data for later analysis and can trigger goal capture scripts for use with optimization and tracking tools.

So I am sure many people will love this tool and I look forward to providing it soon.

Early adopters to my software will get it free, and hopefully you will take an active part on these forums with useful feedback and suggestions for additional functionality.

I will be using my software to power features on this site, for example, when you download the Download Tracker Software, it is actually being delivered by that software!
